In the beginning, it all started with an inspiring vision, that the Armenian pride of winning national independence almost the first time in our recent history must be preserved, and the independence of the people of Armenia must not be compromised at all costs. And that the people of the Diaspora have the profound obligation to help the fatherland, however it may be, or whenever and wherever possible. As such, the Armenians all over the world must therefore organize and take initiative, to help both Armenia and Karabagh survive the economic hardship that is forced upon them.
"For almost 80 years, we craved for an independent Armenia crying with the songs while promising ourselves that if we ever have independence again, it will not be compromised". On September 11, 1992 in Montebello Tumanjian Hall, said the late Varujan Karian in these words, which touched us all and propelled us to establish the organization that was named "Hayrenik Miyutyun" Friends of Armenia.
The propellant behind Varujan's charged state of mind after his return from Armenia, was an articulate and forceful young man Sarkis Hatsbanian who volunteered to serve as our representative, as he was also for several other European organizations in Armenia and Karabagh. Sarkis knew the potential of Armenians in the Diaspora, as he recently had immigrated to Armenia from France, to participate in liberation of Karabagh. Sarkis became the enabler of our mission.
Establishment of the Friends of Armenia (Miyutyun) brought together Armenians from many countries who call America home. Many Russian Armenians pledged cooperation, Armenians from Turkey joined the ranks, and Armenians from Lebanon, Egypt, Armenia, Iran, and Iraq and some 2nd generation American Armenians became active members.
